Rosacea vs. Acne: What’s the Difference?
Learn the key differences between rosacea and acne. While they may look similar, their causes, symptoms, and treatments are entirely different. Discover how to identify and treat them correctly.

🔍 Rosacea vs. Acne, what’s the difference?
‘I keep getting breakouts on my cheeks. Isn’t it acne?’
‘My skin is red and stinging, but acne treatments aren’t helping…’
These are questions I hear very often in the clinic.
Although they may look similar on the surface, rosacea and acne have completely different causes and treatments.
Today, I will easily compare and summarize these two conditions.
1️⃣ What is Acne (Acne vulgaris)?
✔ Key Characteristics of Acne
Excessive sebum production
Clogged pores + inflammation
Accompanied by blackheads, whiteheads, and pustules
Commonly occurs in areas with developed sebaceous glands (especially the T-zone of the face, back, chest, etc.)
✔ Causes of Acne
Increased sebum secretion
Hormonal influences
Clogged pores
Proliferation of acne-causing bacteria
👉 The presence of comedones is the key point that differentiates it from rosacea!!

Non-inflammatory lesions: Whiteheads, Blackheads
Inflammatory lesions: Papules, Pustules, Nodules, Cysts

Types of Acne Comedones

2️⃣ What is Rosacea?

✔ Key Characteristics of Rosacea
Face flushes easily (Persistent erythema+, Flushing+)
Burning sensation, stinging, heat (Burning sensation+)
Small, millet-like inflammation possible, but no comedones (comedone-)
Mainly occurs on the cheeks, around the nose, and chin

✔ Causes of Rosacea
Skin barrier damage
Vascular hypersensitivity
Misuse or abuse of steroid ointments
Excessive peeling, unsuitable laser treatments for the skin type, highly irritating cosmetics
👉 **‘Inflammation + Blood Vessels + Skin Barrier Issues’** is the core.
3️⃣ Rosacea vs. Acne: At a Glance
Category | Acne | Rosacea |
Main Causes | Sebum, Pores | Skin Barrier, Blood Vessels |
Blackheads | Many | Rarely any |
Redness | Only when inflamed | Face is constantly red |
Symptoms | Painful only when inflamed, can cause scarring | Burning, stinging, does not cause scarring |
Aggravating Factors | Food, alcohol, smoking, sex hormones, sleep, stress, wrong cosmetics and cleansing habits, seasons | Heat, alcohol, irritation, wrong cosmetics and cleansing habits |
Treatment | Lifestyle improvements, medication, skincare + laser + microneedling RF | Lifestyle improvements, medication, vascular laser + RF + skin boosters |
4️⃣ Why Confusion Makes It Worse
If you mistake rosacea for acne and do:
❌ Peeling
❌ Extractions
❌ Sebum control procedures
❌ Exfoliation
These treatments can actually make the symptoms much worse.
‘I keep getting treatments, but it gets redder.’
In this case, it is highly likely to be rosacea.
5️⃣ The Treatment Approach is Completely Different
✔ Acne Treatment
Sebum control
Inflammation treatment
Extractions + regeneration care
Oral medication in some cases
✔ Rosacea Treatment
Skin soothing
Barrier restoration
Vascular stabilization
Minimizing irritation is the top priority
👉 Even if they are both ‘breakouts,’ the approach is the exact opposite.
6️⃣ Suspect Rosacea in These Cases
Your face stays red even after acne treatments
Your face burns or stings after washing
It gets significantly worse after alcohol, coffee, or saunas
It worsened after using steroid ointments
✔ In Conclusion
Rosacea and acne are
**‘skin conditions that look similar but are completely different.’**
If you start treatment without an accurate diagnosis,
your recovery may actually be delayed.
The most important thing is getting the right treatment for your skin condition.
