Vaseline Series Overview (Part 3) - Part 1. Does applying only Vaseline improve your skin? That is only half true
Vaseline is an occlusive that seals in moisture, not a moisturizer that hydrates. Applying it to dry skin without prior hydration is ineffective.

Lately, on YouTube and blogs, you often hear people say, ‘You do not need to go to a dermatologist if you have Vaseline.’
You can even frequently hear claims like, ‘You do not need expensive creams; Vaseline is enough.’
However, this is only half true.
Why only half? Because if you do not know the other half, it can actually harm your skin.
📌 Vaseline is not a ‘moisturizer’ in the conventional sense.
First, let us look at the ingredients.
The main ingredient of Vaseline is Petrolatum, a semi-solid substance derived from the petroleum refining process.
Its dermatological role is as an ‘occlusive,’ meaning it acts as a physical barrier.
Moisturizers can be broadly divided into:
Humectants (water attractors)
Emollients (skin softeners)
Occlusives (moisture sealants).
Unlike ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin that attract moisture,
Vaseline works in a completely different way.
Rather than supplying moisture, it forms a film over the skin surface
to prevent the moisture already inside the skin from evaporating.

In fact, Petrolatum is known in dermatology as one of the most powerful occlusives,
significantly reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
and protecting a damaged skin barrier.
According to research,
Vaseline shows a strong occlusive effect, reducing moisture loss by 50 to 99%.
[Things you must know!!]
What Vaseline does:
Prevents moisture from escaping.
Blocks external irritants.
What Vaseline cannot do:
Reduce inflammation.
Solve the root cause of itching.
Treat acne or skin diseases.
📌 Why does it feel moisturizing when applied?
The reason it feels moisturizing is not because new moisture has been added.
It is because the moisture originally inside the skin is trapped and cannot escape.
To use an analogy, it is not like pouring more water into a leaking bucket,
but rather plugging the hole so the water does not drain out.
📌 Problems caused by misunderstanding this
If you mistakenly believe that Vaseline provides moisture, your skincare routine will fall apart.
A prime example is applying only Vaseline after washing your face without supplying any moisture first.
In this case, the inside of the skin remains dry while only the surface is blocked.
Sealing the skin is meaningless if there is no moisture to trap.
📌 It becomes clearer when looking at research papers

This paper shows that Petrolatum does not merely act as a ‘cover,’
but can also promote skin barrier recovery,
reduce moisture loss (TEWL),
and even induce some antimicrobial responses.
However, there is an important point.
This effect occurs in a ‘situation where existing skin moisture and the barrier are being protected.’
In other words, if applied alone when the skin lacks moisture, it is difficult to fully utilize its benefits.
📌 One-line summary
Vaseline is not a moisturizer, but a cover.
A cover is only meaningful when there are contents inside.
