Vaseline Series Overview (Part 2 of 3) - Applying Vaseline Like This Will Actually Ruin Your Skin
Vaseline is a safe ingredient, but using it incorrectly can worsen skin conditions. Avoid applying it over unwashed skin, in thick layers, under makeup, or on oily, acne-prone skin.

Vaseline is undoubtedly a safe ingredient.
It is a proven ingredient in terms of irritation, to the extent that dermatology clinics use it as a protective barrier after procedures.
However, being safe does not mean you can use it however you want.
Depending on how it is used and your skin condition, it can actually become a cause of worsening breakouts.
In fact, I often see a significant number of acne patients in my clinic who are using Vaseline incorrectly.
❌ Mistake 1. Applying it without washing your face properly
This is the most common and dangerous mistake.
If you apply Vaseline while sebum, dust, and makeup residue accumulated throughout the day are still on your skin,
you are essentially trapping all of that underneath.

Because Vaseline forms a strong occlusive barrier, it traps the already existing sebum, impurities, and bacteria.
If this condition is repeated, it leads to
Clogged pores
Oxidation
and inflammatory responses, which can ultimately worsen acne.
❌ Mistake 2. Applying multiple thick layers
Vaseline is not an ingredient that gets absorbed into the skin.
Therefore, applying more does not mean the effects will be better.
On the contrary, applying a thick layer causes
An increase in skin surface temperature
A decrease in sebum excretion
and stagnation within the pores.
As a result, it creates an environment prone to breakouts.
❌ Mistake 3. Using it before makeup
Recently, some videos have introduced a method of using Vaseline like a primer.
However, this is a very dangerous habit.
When Vaseline and foundation mix on the skin, this mixture can seep into the pores
and promote the formation of comedones.
If this habit is repeated, it often leads to
Blackheads
Whiteheads
and inflammatory acne.
❌ Mistake 4. Using it constantly on oily or acne-prone skin
If an occlusive barrier is continuously formed on skin with high sebum secretion, the sebum cannot be excreted and stagnates inside the skin.
Eventually, there is a high possibility of this progressing from closed comedones to inflammatory acne.
📌 Why does this happen?
Vaseline itself is a safe ingredient with almost no irritation.
However, the problem is the ‘skin environment’.
Because Vaseline creates a strong occlusive barrier, the results vary depending on what you are covering.
If used on clean and stable skin, it acts as a protective shield, but if used when there are many impurities and excess sebum,
it can act in a way that worsens that environment.
📌 Medically speaking, it is even clearer
Skin diseases largely involve
three factors working together: the skin barrier, biological environment, and inflammatory response.
Vaseline is
helpful for barrier protection and effective in reducing moisture loss, but
it is not an ingredient that resolves sebum control, pore management, or inflammation control.
📌 Key Takeaways
Vaseline is helpful when used correctly, but if used incorrectly, it can create an environment that causes acne.
Because of the belief that it is a safe ingredient, even more caution is actually required.
