Lifestyle Habit Correction Part 4 - Incorrect Exfoliation Ruins Your Skin: A Dermatologist's Standard

Exfoliation isn't always necessary and can actually damage your skin barrier. Learn why dermatologists recommend focusing on skin recovery and hydration rather than harsh scrubbing.

Lifestyle Habit Correction Part 4 - Incorrect Exfoliation Ruins Your Skin: A Dermatologist's Standard

1️⃣ Is exfoliation really necessary?

‘Exfoliation is essential.’

‘You need to do it regularly to improve your skin.’

Many people think this way.

However, in the clinic, I see the exact opposite situation much more often.

👉 Rather than problems caused by not exfoliating,

👉 I see far more skin ruined by over-exfoliating.

2️⃣ Dead skin cells are not waste

Dead skin cells are not dirt.

👉 They are your skin's protective barrier.

This layer must exist

to prevent moisture from escaping

and to block external irritants from entering.

So, when this layer breaks down,

👉 your skin immediately becomes sensitive.

Skincare products start to sting,

your skin reddens easily,

and you experience inner dryness.

👉 The conclusion is simple:

The stratum corneum (dead skin layer) is not something to be removed, but something to be protected.

3️⃣ Then why do people say exfoliation is necessary?

This is where it gets confusing.

For oily skin types,

dead skin cells can build up at the entrance of the pores, preventing sebum from escaping.

In reality,

keratin and sebum combine to block the pore,

acting like a ‘plug’.

In these cases, properly clearing the dead skin cells opens up the blocked pores,

allowing sebum to be released,

reducing blackheads,

and potentially decreasing acne breakouts.

👉 The key point:

This applies only to ‘specific cases’.

It is not a necessary routine for all skin types.

4️⃣ For most people, ‘you do not have too many dead skin cells’

Illustration comparing healthy skin and dry skin (similar to an over-exfoliated state)

What I see more commonly in the clinic is

👉 not an excess of dead skin cells,

👉 but skin that looks flaky because it is dry.

What happens if you exfoliate in this state?

👉 You are stripping away an already weakened barrier once again.

As a result,

your skin becomes drier,

more sensitive,

and more prone to breakouts.

👉 This is why people say:

‘I exfoliated/got a peeling treatment, but my skin got worse.’

5️⃣ How does exfoliation work?

Ultimately, exfoliation is

👉 the process of forcibly removing dead skin cells.

There are two methods:

Physical scrubbing or

Chemical peeling.

AHA → Surface clearing

BHA → Pore cleansing

PHA → Mild exfoliation

LHA → Acne care for sensitive skin

👉 Each ingredient works differently due to variations in molecular size and solubility.

6️⃣ The problem is ‘repetition’

When you exfoliate, your skin feels temporarily smooth.

So you keep doing it.

However, in the process, your skin barrier becomes increasingly thinner.

As a result,

moisture evaporates faster,

your skin reacts more easily to irritants,

and it becomes progressively more sensitive.

👉 The most common case in the clinic:

‘I exfoliated consistently, but at some point, my skin just broke out completely.’

7️⃣ The dermatological standard is different

Exfoliation is not a basic routine.

👉 It is a ‘tool’ to be used only when necessary.

Especially for:

Sensitive skin

Rosacea

Post-laser treatment skin

👉 In these cases, stopping exfoliation is the first priority, not doing it.

8️⃣ The single most important thing

The core of dead skin cell management is not removal.

👉 It is recovery.

When the skin barrier is stable, dead skin cells will naturally shed on their own.

👉 That is why moisturizing is the most important step.

9️⃣ The core of this series

Looking at what we have covered so far:

Applying too much ruins it.

Washing too much ruins it.

Rubbing ruins it.

Peeling ruins it.

👉 The conclusion is singular:

The more you mess with your skin, the more it gets damaged.

🔟 Conclusion

If your skin has become sensitive, you shouldn't do more.

👉 You need to do less.

What is more important than smooth skin is

👉 resilient skin.

👉 In the next article,

I will summarize ‘what you should actually use’

based on dermatological standards. 👍
